Don’t you love trends in knitting? Sometimes the craziest things will take off and it seems like that one thing will turn up every where. This season, the super scarf has been showing up all over the place. Everybody has an idea for a super scarf pattern. Even the Craft Yarn Council published ideas for super scarf projects.
What’s so cool about knitting a Super Scarf?
- It’s huge, so it’s definitely going to keep you warm.
- It’s very on-trend, so you can knit something that looks very fashion forward.
- It can be a very simple pattern, but still yield a big impact.
- It’s an awesome TV knitting project
Admittedly, this was shown back in September and October for Fall looks. There’s just one problem with that. It was too darn warm to wear them! Where I live, we had days in the 80s well into October. Fall just isn’t what it used to be around here. But come January? It’s freezing cold!
Perfect time for super scarves.
I posted this image in my knitting group on Facebook, and people went wild! They loved everything about this scarf, including my handsome model, Jason. It was really chilly the day we took these photos but Jason said he was toasty warm in this scarf. And he loved all the colors of the yarn.
Jason is very tall. He’s 6’2″, so you can see this scarf worked really well on his frame. It’s so substantial, it looks great just wearing in one wrap around the neck as shown here.
The hallmark of a really good knitting pattern is that it works well on a variety of people.
I know what you’re saying. “Sure, this looks good on a very tall, broad shouldered, blonde man. How’s it gonna look on me?” Well, hang on.
Meet Samantha! She’s very petite and here she is wearing the same scarf. It looks amazing on her, right? That’s the cool thing about this whole super scarf idea; it is so crazy it looks good on everybody!
This scarf also looks good in a downtown or a more traditional venue.
So whether you live in the city or in the suburbs, this scarf is going to work for you.
A great knit always starts out with the same thing. A great yarn. Knitting is nothing without good yarn. Seriously. The yarn I used for this is pretty special, and I had to work pretty hard to get it. But I think it was worth the struggle.
I purchased this amazing fiber from Michael’s just before Christmas. I absolutely LOVE it. It’s massively chunky, so it’s super fun to play with. They suggest using a size 19US needle with it on the label, but there’s no way. It’s too fat for that. I suggest starting with a 35US and then considering a 50US. It’s seriously fat yarn. It would also be good for arm knitting projects. It’s so, so soft. You will love petting it. There’s only one problem with it.
It may not come back next year.
So if you like this pattern, and you love this yarn, you better run out right now and see if you can find any. How do I know it may not be coming back? Because in my search to obtain enough to make a blanket for myself, I went from store to store. Finally in one store, the clerk explained that this is a seasonal product. Seasonal items are put out to see how they do. If they do well, they might become a regular product. Maybe. Nobody knows until next year.
Want to know how to determine if the yarn you’re looking at is going to be there from season to season or if it’s a special thing? I’m about to share some super insider information here. Look at these pictures:
See where I’ve circled in the pictures? The “X” indicates it’s seasonal merchandise and the “A” means it’s a yarn Michael’s will continue to carry as a regular product. This could prove very helpful if you’re trying to design something yourself or if you aren’t sure if you have enough for your project. They may not have any more of it when you go back to get another skein to finish your project. So get a little extra.
You don’t really want to purposefully design patterns around a yarn that is in limited stock or is going to be discontinued. So why did I do it? Honestly, I just wanted the yarn to make myself a blanket and as I swatched with it, it just looked so cool. I just had to make an accessory and photograph it!
Gorgeous, right? And sooooooooo simple to make! Oh my goodness!
You need four skills to make this scarf:
- Cast On
- Knit
- Purl
- Bind Off
Yup. That’s all it is. Even if you can’t do all of that right now, you can still grab the pattern and hold onto it until you can. Even if you can’t find this beautiful Chunky Grande product, you can find something else or you can hold two or more strands together and knit them at the same time.

If you have a budget, Gentle Giant from Purl Soho would be a gorgeous luxury option. Or hold two or three strands of Lion Brand Thick and Quick together.
But I hope for two things. One is I hope you can find this colorful yarn, and Two is I hope Michael’s will bring it back. It’s so awesome, and literally everybody who’s seen it knit into that scarf has gone crazy for it.
