Today’s Story is how to style your Foxy Lady hat to look like a black cat for Halloween; it’s a makeup tutorial as well as a feature on my own adorable cat ear beanie knitting pattern.
There are two things that absolutely SCREAM Halloween to me. One is pumpkins. The second thing that comes to my mind for Halloween are black cats. They are called Familiars by witches, and you will always see witches and black cats close together. My obvious love and talent for growing herbs and flowers while having a black cat pretty much always in my life since I was a small child would have spelled big trouble for me about 400 years ago. Good thing for me it’s 2016 and not 1616.
In the last post, we saw how a little bit of makeup could transform someone wearing my Foxy Lady hat into the cutest ever fox. The right color of yarn and the appropriate makeup and, “Voila!” the Sly Fox is born. Today I’m going to show you that using similar products and techniques, the same hat knit in different yarn and a slightly different costume will yield the cutest ever Kitty Cat Look!
See what I mean? This is one cute Kitty Cat! This lovely lady is Kristin, and is a local celebrity of sorts here in the area. She models for everyone!! I call her the “Face of Hampton Roads,” because she models for so many clients. She’s also a regular on the bridal show circuit which is HUGE here. She’s sooooo talented and sooooooo nice. We’ve been wanting to work together for a while, and it just wasn’t coming together. I’m so happy it finally worked out. Oh, and she’s mom to Chloe who appeared in the Sly Fox post. They are now a modeling duo, which I think is so cool! Her girls modeled for me a couple of years back so I’m thrilled we were able to do something again. If I only had more hours in the day, I would do a LOT more photography, but it’s not possible right now. But…..I am hoping to work with both Chloe and Kristin more in the future. They are super awesome ladies, and fit the spirit of being nice and helpful that Pattymac Knits embodies.
Because I think being nice is still important. Some people seem to have forgotten that.
Today’s makeup tutorial was designed by my lovely friend Megan Bell of Megan Ashe Boutique here in Virginia Beach. Megan creates beautiful hair, but she’s also really talented with makeup. She works on a ton of bridal clients, so she enjoys trying something a little bit different on my projects. I love Megan’s touch with makeup. She really knows how to do a beautiful application that enhances someone without being completely over the top. Some makeup artists will apply an overly costumey look even for a knitwear shoot, and it just doesn’t work (unless you’re Stephen West, and I haven’t done anything quite that conceptualized). My stuff is not really an over-the-top production and often times I find make up artists forget the photo shoot is not about showcasing their work, but about presenting the model in a way most appropriate for the products being presented. That’s a topic for another day. (don’t get me started)
This look is designed to use 3 main products, so it’s pretty easy to do. We made up Kristin’s eyes in a way that is more dramatic than a regular day look, but not over done. Think if you were going out to dinner in a really nice restaurant. That’s pretty much the eye look we went with. Then the kitty cat part of the design was done all around the mouth and nose. The heart shaped nose is an adorable touch! The whiskers are best applied using a makeup brush, but don’t worry. We are going to tell you exactly what you need in today’s free printable!
But before we get to that, I thought you might enjoy this! Just in case you aren’t already convinced that being a Kitty Cat for Halloween with your knitted hat is an awesome idea.
How cute was that? I love the makeup with my Foxy Lady Hat Pattern. I knitted it especially for Kristin and added that cute SteamPunk Cameo pin as a decoration. She’s got a Rock ‘n’ Roll personality, so I thought that particular embellishment was perfect for her. Just like the one I put on Chloe’s hat last week, I got it in the jewelry section of Michael’s. The yarn is also a Michael’s product so you can get every thing there. (No they aren’t sponsoring me to say that, but I wouldn’t mind if they did.)

I promise that you can do this super cute look on yourself or on little girl. You could be twinsies!! You know how much I love Mommy and Me stuff. Here’s a look at Megan’s finished makeup design. It’s literally three steps (after you do your eyes the way you like them.) For little girls, you can omit the eye makeup altogether.
I hope this inspires you to try something a little more handcrafted this Halloween instead of just running to the store to buy some other mass produced, poorly made, mostly plastic thing that everybody else has. Knitting your own hat and doing your own makeup will give you such a unique and original flair. And if, like me, you’re weary with the overtly sexy and completely inappropriate barrage of crap they push on women every year, I hope this inspires you to be pretty and resist trashy. ‘Cause really, there’s more than enough of that to go around.
