There are Mermaids walking among us, and some of them happen to love cats.
If your favorite pet had been a drippy, cold octopus, then imagine the delight in petting that soft, warm cat fur for the first time. Is it any wonder Mermaids would stay on land as long as possible to keep company with cats?
Say hello to the Purrr Maid Knitting Pattern; an adorable seaside inspired Cat Hat Knitting Pattern.

In case you didn’t realize it by now, I love to reinvent the wheel. What I mean to say is that I love to find new ways to present similar ideas. I think it’s fun to look at something from a whole new angle. Which is how this pattern came to be.
This week I am publishing the Purrr-Maid Hat. It’s similar to my other cat hats, but there is a special surprise in the ears. I came up with a whole new way of making them. I actually think it’s genius. Also the color choice and the way it’s decorated makes it a really different look at something familiar.

Construction and seaming in garments and accessories is an important consideration. It’s also important to keep things on the simpler side so beginners can still make the project. So this hat is a perfect marriage of form and function. It’s also pretty darn cute!

You may be wondering who this darling model is.
The lovely young lady featured this week is named Morgan, and she is brand new on the blog. To get ready for school, she set up an appointment with Megan Bell, who does hair for both of us. Morgan has long, beautiful hair, and since pastel is really popular right now, she and Megan decided to take her hair into a blue shade. That way, she would have something really special to wear the first couple of weeks back to class. Why blue?
You see Morgan thinks of herself as a mermaid.
Megan and I have been wanting to work on projects together again, and Morgan was excited to pose. So….once I realized I would be taking Mermaid inspired pictures, I knew I wanted a special hat to go along with the look. It needed to be something inspired by the sea. And this is what I came up with.

Truly, the combination of this hat and that beautiful blue hair is amazing! I think Morgan made for the perfect Purrr-Maid. Don’t you?
You may be asking, “Why something seaside when we are into fall?” Ok. Yes I know Pumpkins are the traditional choice. And don’t worry, as I have plenty of orange and pumpkins coming your way the rest of the month. Something to consider is that a lot of us live in coastal communities (or wish that we did), and it can get pretty darn chilly in fall and winter.
Living in a beach community, all the the traditional knitted pieces can look, well, a little out of place. I wanted to come up with some patterns that celebrate living on the ocean.
I think my Purrr-Maid cat hat does a great job at this. And especially when I paired it with my Seaside Fingerless Mitts!

I personally love a winter beach. In fact, it’s my favorite time to go to the beach. It seems peaceful to me, because you can enjoy the experience of seeing the ocean without all the people. We have a lot of piers, so I regularly drive out to the ocean and spend some quiet time on a pier just listening to the waves and to the gulls. I highly recommend it if you get the chance.
There’s just one thing about it. It’s freezing cold!
Yeah. If you live in NY and visit the Jersey shore in January, you know exactly what I’m talking about. And doesn’t this seem far more suitable to wear during that seaside visit than something in black or red?

Or maybe you’re from the coast and for whatever reason, you find yourself living inland.
Knitting this set for yourself is a great way to feel a little bit closer to your seaside home while you’re away.
I lived in the mountains for 7 years, and even though it was beautiful, I really missed being in Virginia Beach. There is something different about the lifestyle and vibe of people who are from “the beach.” I am so glad I came back. I love the easy going attitude and mind set of living in a beach town. Creating this set is my love letter to the Atlantic Ocean, and I hope if you are someone who misses dipping your toes in the salty sea, you find something fun and comforting in this small collection.

Both patterns are written with beginners in mind. The mitts are a flat knit, but you do need to knit-in-the-round to construct the hat. These two pieces are packaged together in one special download. Since it’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts, I think this pattern set with the yarn and special charms would make a wonderful kit for a Seaside Dreaming knitter in your life. The set is available in both my etsy and ravelry shops. The Pattern link will take you to either.
I’m ending the post today with a special video I created to show off the hat pattern. You can expect a TON more video coming up, so get ready. In the meantime, enjoy this moving portrait that features the Purrr-Maid Cat Hat.
